Another Canadian political birthday to mark today! The Mayor of Calgary, His Worship Naheed Nenshi, was born on this date in 1972. Regardless of one’s political views, Mayor Nenshi is a point of pride for Canadians as he is the very first Muslim mayor of any North American major city. Since Calgary voters send Nenshi to the Mayor’s Office at Calgary City Hall, the same voters have returned him to their city’s top political job two more times. So, it is a pleasure to send birthday greetings from Kingston, via “Art’s History,” to this ground-breaking Canadian mayor today.

Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist. He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney’s best-selling Memoirs and also served as a speechwriter to then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper and as a Fellow of the Queen’s Centre for the Study of Democracy under the leadership of Tom Axworthy. A resident of Kingston, Ontario, Milnes serves as the in-house historian at the 175 year-old Frontenac Club Hotel.
