Ontario’s first female Premier, Kathleen Wynne, was born on this date in 1953.  She was raised in Richmond Hill and went on to earn degrees at Queen’s University, the University of Toronto and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Before entering provincial politics, she served with distinction on the Toronto Public School Board. Elected to the Ontario Legislature in 2003, Wynne later became a cabinet minister in the governments of Dalton McGuinty.  Upon the latter’s retirement she was elected Ontario Liberal leader and became Premier. Against the odds she led her party to a majority victory in 2014 and would continue as Premier of Ontario until 2018. Personally, I owe Ms. Wynne a great deal as she has been a firm supporter of my work in the field of political history, even once leading with me a history-themed walking tour for students on the grounds of the Ontario Legislature. Hon. Brian Mulroney’s best-selling Memoirs and also served as a speechwriter to then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper and as a Fellow of the Queen’s Centre for the Study of Democracy under the leadership of Tom Axworthy.  A resident of Kingston, Ontario, Milnes serves as the in-house historian at the 175 year-old Frontenac Club Hotel.
