History was made on this date in Alberta in 1935 with the election of the legendary William “Bible Bill” Aberhart and his Social Credit party colleagues to office. Aberhart, a graduate of Queen’s University and educator, would become the province’s 7
th Premier.
A radio evangelist, Aberhart and his Social Credit theories offered hope to many in Western Canadian as the Great Depression raged. He famously once even attempted to convert the visiting Queen Elizabeth to the Social Credit cause.

Premier Aberhart would lead his province until his sudden death in 1943. He was succeeded by Ernest Manning and Social Credit would remain in office in Alberta until 1971.
