Today in Canada’s Political History: Happy anniversary Harriet and Mackenzie Bowell!

Canada’s fifth Prime Minister, Sir Mackenzie Bowell, was married on this date in 1847 to Harriet Louisa Moore. They had first met in 1842 and the future PM courted his beloved for five years between their wedding. The couple would have nine children. In marking Bowell’s marriage for Art’s History, I am reminded what an important month December was for the pride of Belleville. He became PM on December 21, 1894, was married on December 12, 1847, and, would pass into history—at age 93 – on December 10, 1917.
