Voters on Prince Edward Island elected a new Premier and government on this date in 1986, giving Liberal Joe Ghiz a majority mandate. Ghiz was a graduate of Dalhousie and Harvard, and had worked as a lawyer in Charlottetown before entering politics. As Premier, he gained national prominence with his support of the Meech Lake Accord. He remained in office until 1993 when he handed-off power to Catherine Callbeck. Ghiz then served as Dean of Law at Dalhousie and was later appointed to PEI’s Supreme Court. His son Robert also served as PEI’s Premier.
