Today in Canada's Political History - January 6, 1919: Theodore Roosvelt passes into history, Sir Robert Borden pays tribute

  • National Newswatch

A giant of American and world politics passed into history on this date in 1919. Theodore Roosvelt, a Renaissance Man who had served as President of the United States along with being a naturalist, historian, explorer, big game hunter and so much more, died at home on Long Island. In the aftermath of his death, Canada’s Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden, who had been privileged to know Roosevelt, spoke to American reporters.

"His vigor of expression, wide vision and high idealism won for him a great place, not only in his own country, but in the wider theatre of world affairs,” Borden said. “The remarkable reception accorded him on his last visit to Canada testifies to the affection and esteem in which he was held by the people of Canada. "I last saw him more than a year ago in a New York hospital, where he was recovering from a severe illness, and I shall always gratefully remember the immense appreciation he then expressed of Canada's effort in the war and the heroic spirit of her people."
