Canada’s 24th Governor General, the Right Honourable Ray Hnatyshyn, was born on this date in 1934. The son of Senator John Hnatyshyn, Ray became a lawyer and was soon attracted to politics. He was elected to the House of Commons as a Progressive Conservative in 1974 and went on to serve in the cabinets of Prime Ministers Joe Clark and Brian Mulroney. Defeated in the free trade election of 1988, Hnatyshyn was recommended to Her Majesty for the post of Governor General in 1989. He was to serve as Rideau Hall from 1990 to 1995. One of the most popular Governors General in recent memory, Hnatyshyn passed into history in 2002.

A resident of Kingston, Ontario, Milnes serves as the in-house historian at the 175 year-old Frontenac Club Hotel.
