Poilievre's message to Canadians is right, and every honest person knows it

It's rare, but sometimes a politician says things that capture the mood of the nation

As a former partisan operative, it's easy to identify political spin and dismiss it. When having a coffee or a beer with someone of the opposite viewpoint, most professionals who work in politics can admit what is fact and what is spin. This dynamic was explored at length by the very talented Stuart Thomson of the National Post.

As I said to Stuart, narratives play a major role for the public in determining what is spin and what is truth. But what if a politician's message transcends this dynamic? What if a political message both captures the dominant narrative and is factual?

Well, that's exactly the situation Pierre Poilievre finds himself in when it comes to his core message to Canadians. That is, whether it’s the carbon tax, high housing prices, inflation, or rising crime rates, Justin Trudeau’s policies are not worth the cost.

Let me tell you how I arrived at this conclusion.

My beloved truck was stolen in 2021. Everyone who knows me knows that, as an unhandy suburban dad, the love I have for my F150 is both deep and ironic.

Whatever. Bad things happen all the time. I am a lucky guy. Onward and upward.

I bought a new truck. This time, to avoid another theft, I ensured that I bought a truck with a key-operated ignition switch, and I now always keep my Ford Pass GPS updated on my phone.

Two years later, I woke up to see that my insurance company was charging me an extra $1,600 a year because I drive a vehicle that is at high risk of being stolen. Never mind the key-switch ignition or GPS; if I don't get the insurance company’s preferred GPS installed in my vehicle, I pay more. That is my tax hike for Justin Trudeau's failure to address the surge of crime in Canadian cities.

As Homer Simpson says, let the bears pay the bear tax. I pay the Homer tax.

So how does this relate to Poilievre? Well, while my situation is very minor and I can afford the insurance premium hike, think of the optics. There I am, a person who has already been a victim of vehicle theft, being penalized despite taking the right precautions while politicians sit idly by and do nothing to address the problem.

I asked myself, how many other people have experienced something like this and felt the same way? How many of those people were already struggling to make ends meet? How many of them voted for Justin Trudeau because they wanted to be part of Canada’s middle class?

Think more than just crime. From the rising cost of living to inflationary spending and skyrocketing housing prices, how many Canadians feel exactly the same way I did, just with different circumstances? We are all the victims of poorly thought-out policies that are costing us more money, despite the fact that we have played by the rules and made all the right decisions.

That's the story right now of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Canadians. That’s why Poilievre is winning so handily.

Poilievre's core message that Trudeau isn’t worth the cost is right. However well-intentioned the Prime Minister is, there is no denying the results of his policies. Anyone who says otherwise is being ideological or dishonest. The more ideological and dishonest the response is to Poilievre, the stronger his majority will be in 2025.
