ST. JOHN'S, N.L. -- The government of Newfoundland and Labrador says residents attempting to use its online platforms may hit a snag because of a technology outage that is upending services around the world.

In a news release, the provincial government says it is working with its service providers to address the issue.

The province's health authority says some of its IT systems are affected, including the main information system used to manage patient and financial data.

Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services says it has contingency plans in place and it is "focused on the delivery of emergency care" until the problem is fixed.

The issue has grounded flights, knocked banks offline and media outlets off air in a massive disruption affecting companies and services worldwide.

Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike says the issue believed to be behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack.
