It was a very historic day in Ottawa on this date in 1867 with MPs gathering for the first session of Parliament for the new Dominion of Canada. The nation, of course, was led by a Scottish immigrant to Canada, the great Sir John A. Macdonald of Kingston, who would forever be known as the Father of Confederation.
Macdonald took to his feet in the Commons for the first time since Confederation on November 6, 1867. He did so in proposing that James Cockburn become the Speaker of the Commons. You can read Macdonald of Kingston’s remarks in full at this link.
