America’s Depression-era President, Herbert Hoover, was in the midst of his 15th visit to Toronto on this date in 1938. And if you think that Jimmy Carter was the only American Chief Executive to teach a Sunday School lesson, think again. The former President was in Toronto was to speak before the annual gathering of the York Bible Class.
“I am always interested in spiritual forces,” Hoover said during an interview with the Toronto Star. “They are the foundation of all our hopes at present-and let me say this: at heart our country is still earnestly religious."
As noted by the paper, Hoover was the world’s most famous Quaker and religion was at the centre of his life.
