Canada’s federal Liberals, led by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, won their third consecutive majority mandate from Canadians on this date in 2000. With 310 seats up for grabs, the Grits won 172.
Canada’s conservative movement remained divided with Stockwell Day and his Canadian Alliance winning 66 seats while the Progressive Conservatives under former Prime Minister Joe Clark won 20 seats. The NDP dropped six seats, winning only 13. Rounding things out was the Bloc Québécois who came out on top in 38 Quebec ridings.
