Today in Canada's Political History - December 3, 1915: The Speaker of the House of Commons moves down the hallway to the Senate

Tory MP Thomas Sproule, who had served a commanding 37 years as a MP, was named to the Senate on this date in 1915 on the advice of Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden. A doctor, he had first been elected to the House of Commons in 1878. When Borden became PM in 1911, Sproule was named Speaker. He held that post until his appointment to the Red Chamber. Sproule served as a Senator for two-years and passed into history in 1917.
