Canada’s fifth Prime Minister, Sir Mackenzie Bowell, passed into history at home in Belleville, Ontario on this date in 1917, while still an active member of the Senate of Canada. His was a remarkable career that saw him serve just over 50 years (!) on Parliament Hill as a MP, Senator, cabinet minister, Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition in the Senate. Bowell was 93 at death and his buried in his home community of Belleville, Ontario.
