Today in Canada's Political History - December 15, 1983: Pierre Trudeau brings his Peace Initiative to Washington

Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau was in Washington on this date in 1983 to meet with President Ronald Reagan at the White House. He was there to update the U.S. Chief Executive on is Peace Initiative, Trudeau’s attempts to lower world-wide nuclear tensions. Reagan reported on his talks with his Canadian counterpart in his private diary.

“P.M. Pierre Trudeau arrived,” the President wrote. “He’s been travelling the world trying to arouse interest in a 5 big nation summit to try & reduce Nuclear weapons. He hasn’t been able to get much interest. Actually, it isn’t a sound idea but still we support his arousing interest in other nation’s, all of them to talk of eliminating such weapons. I think he went away with some added ammunition.”
