Today in Canada's Political History - February 23, 1995: President Bill Clinton praises a united Canada in speech to Parliament

  • National Newswatch

All eyes were on the House of Commons chamber on this date in 1995 with President Bill Clinton in town to address MPs and Senators. As Leader of the Opposition and Quebec separatist Lucien Bouchard looked on, Clinton went to bat for a united Canada. “In a world darkened by ethnic conflicts that tear nations apart, Canada stands as a model of how people of different cultures can live and work together in peace, prosperity, and mutual respect,” he said. “Canada’s notable achievement of national unity and progress through accommodation, moderation, and forbearance can be studied with profit by sister nations.”
