WINNIPEG -- The Manitoba government is planning to spend hundreds of millions of dollars more on capital projects this year and offer a mixture of tax changes as part of its annual budget.

Finance Minister Adrien Sala says the potential economic impact of tariffs imposed by the United States requires steps to protect Manitoba's economy.

The NDP government's budget promises major increases in construction, including a four per cent boost for highways.

Municipalities are to get four per cent of provincial fuel tax revenues for projects such as rinks and community centres.

On the tax side, the province is increasing a tax credit for homeowners by $100 and is reducing the payroll tax paid by employers.

The province will take in more personal income tax money by no longer raising tax brackets in line with inflation.

More coming.
