ST. JOHN'S -- Liberal Anthony Germain has won the rural Newfoundland riding of Terra Nova -- The Peninsulas by just 12 votes after a white-knuckle election night that began with the Conservative candidate looking likely to win.
The candidates in the central Newfoundland riding had been waiting for the results since the early morning hours.
Germain's win confirms the Liberal party's dominance of Atlantic Canada with 25 seats.
The Conservatives won the remaining seven seats in the region.
For hours after the polls closed Monday night, it seemed as if Conservative Jonathan Rowe would take Terra Nova -- The Peninsulas, which was previously held by a Liberal.
However, a surge of ballots favouring Germain were tallied and reported later in the night, and Germain was ahead by just 46 votes as of 2 a.m.
After final votes were tallied in Monday's federal election, the Liberals won a minority government with a total of 169 seats.
