Today in Canada's Political History - May 9, 2019: Dennis King becomes Premier of Prince Edward Island

Progressive Conservative Dennis King was sworn-in as Premier of PEI heading a minority government on this date in 2019. He had been chosen party leader only a few months before. King had previously served as a political staffer, working as Executive Assistant and Direction of Communications for then Premier Pat Binns. In April 2023, King and his party were re-elected by island voters and remain in office today. He stepped down as PEI’s Premier earlier this year and is now Canada’s Ambassador to Ireland.




Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist. He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney’s best-selling Memoirs and also served as a speechwriter to then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper and as a Fellow of the Queen’s Centre for the Study of Democracy under the leadership of Tom Axworthy. A resident of Kingston, Ontario, Milnes serves as the in-house historian at the 175 year-old Frontenac Club Hotel.
