Today in Canada's Political History - May 18, 1943: Harry Nixon becomes Ontario Premier

  • National Newswatch

It was on this date in 1943 that Harry Nixon became Ontario's Premier. For old folks like me it is worth noting that Premier Nixon was the last Liberal Premier until 42 years later, in June 1985, when my friend David Peterson became Premier. And old Queen's Park political staff -- like my wife and I proudly are -- will recall that Premier Nixon's son, Robert Nixon, was Treasurer under Premier Peterson. Bob Nixon was, and remains, a living legend. His daughter, Jane Stewart, also served in public life as a leading member of then Prime Minister Jean Chrétien ’s cabinet. So happy anniversary to all members of the Nixon family from “Art’s History” today.
