About 7,000 people in and around La Ronge, Sask., will be allowed to return home on Thursday after the lifting of a wildfire evacuation order.

Lyle Hannan, director of La Ronge's emergency operations centre, says residents of La Ronge, Air Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band can start going home at 8 a.m. that day.

Hannan says those deemed to work in essential services will be allowed to return sooner.

He says rain the last few days helped crews contain the wildfire near the communities.

Along with favourable weather conditions, Hannan says the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency was also able to bring in more staff and resources to help fight the fire.

The news comes on the same day Saskatchewan's ombudsperson slammed the province's wildfire response, saying it's failing to provide immediate food, shelter and basic information to evacuees.

More coming.
