Elections Alberta says it has confirmed signature collecting can begin to try to recall NDP education critic Amanda Chapman from her role as the legislature representative for Calgary-Beddington.

Petitioner Laurie McCormack says Chapman needs to go because she is putting strident, divisive, partisan attacks above "common-sense representation," and backs public-sector unions at the expense of residents.

Chapman and the NDP have harshly criticized Premier Danielle Smith's government for recently legislating striking teachers back to work, and Chapman says that's what almost all of her constituents told her to do.

Elections Alberta has also approved recall petitions against three more members of Smith's United Conservative caucus, bringing that total to 17.

The new recalls are against cabinet ministers Adriana LaGrange and Tanya Fir, and backbencher Peter Singh.
