Today in Canada's Political History: December 21, 1985, Helen Hunley of Alberta makes history!

On this date in 1985 Prime Minister Brian Mulroney announced the appointment (by the Queen on his recommendation) of Helen Hunley as Her Majesty’s representative in Alberta. She was the first-ever woman to serve in this important vice-regal role in her province. A veteran town councilor and past Mayor of Rocky Mountain House, Hunley served with distinction in the cabinets of Premier Peter Lougheed in the 1970s. She held office as Lt.-Governor until 1991. Her Honour past into history at age 90 in 2010.




Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist. He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney’s best-selling Memoirs and also served as a speechwriter to then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper and as a Fellow of the Queen’s Centre for the Study of Democracy under the leadership of Tom Axworthy. A resident of Kingston, Ontario, Milnes serves as the in-house historian at the 175 year-old Frontenac Club Hotel.
