ST. JOHN'S -- The Newfoundland town of Trepassey has declared a state of emergency as high seas pounded its coastline in the wake of a 24-hour winter storm.
Images on social media show roaring seas have all but pulverized the breakwater in the community of about 400 people along the southern coast of Newfoundland's easternmost peninsula.
The breakwater's wooden walls ran along a narrow strip of land connecting two parts of the town.
Images show ocean waves spilling over onto the strip, with not much left to keep them at bay.
Meteorologist Eddie Sheerr says the storm began at roughly 2 a.m. on Monday, and it ended at about 2 a.m. Tuesday, with a short break in the snowfall on Monday afternoon.
He says weather watchers in the greater St. John's region recorded snowfalls between 40 and 47 centimetres this morning.
