Today in Canada's Political History: March 21, 1936, Birth of Ed Broadbent

The future leader of the federal NDP, Ed Broadbent, came into this world on this date in 1936. Born in Oshawa, he went on to become a MP in 1968 and was elected leader of his party in 1975, serving in that post until 1989. He was greatly admired by partisans on all sides of the House. His life and career was remembered fondly upon his passing at age 87 in 2024.




Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist. He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney’s best-selling Memoirs and also served as a speechwriter to then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper and as a Fellow of the Queen’s Centre for the Study of Democracy under the leadership of Tom Axworthy. A resident of Kingston, Ontario, Milnes serves as the in-house historian at the 175 year-old Frontenac Club Hotel.
