The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII before his 1936 abdication) started a two-month long Canadian tour on this date in 1919. He traveled from sea to shining sea and his trip to this side of the Atlantic and was part of the Royal Family’s tribute to Canada’s sacrifices in the First World War. The Prince fell in love with our country and even purchased an Alberta ranch, one that he made occasional visits to for decades afterwards. The future King endeared himself to Canadians on his tour, famously stating, “I came to Canada as a Canadian in mind and spirit."

Brian Mulroney’s best-selling Memoirs and also served as a speechwriter to then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper and as a Fellow of the Queen’s Centre for the Study of Democracy under the leadership of Tom Axworthy. A resident of Kingston, Ontario, Milnes serves as the in-house historian at the 175 year-old Frontenac Club Hotel.
