SAGUENAY -- Voters in the Quebec riding of Chicoutimi-Le Fjord have elected Liberal candidate Daniel Gobeil in a federal byelection.

Gobeil will replace Conservative Richard Martel, who accepted a Senate appointment from Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Martel had represented the Saguenay-area riding since 2018.

The vote in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord was one of three federal byelections held on Monday.

Two other federal byelections were also taking place, in Beaches-East York in Toronto and North Vancouver-Capilano in British Columbia.

Gobeil is the former president of an organization representing Quebec dairy farmers.
