OTTAWA -- Canada's retaliatory tariffs on American goods are now in effect, targeting dozens of products from the United States, including toilet paper, sunscreen and plywood.

The duties of between 15 and 50 per cent kicked in just after midnight EDT on nearly $28 billion of American goods.

It is the exact value of Canadian exports to the United States that were slapped with 50 per cent tariffs on Aug. 22.

The products Canada is targeting are among the Canadian products that are being tariffed by the United States.

U.S. President Donald Trump launched the latest tariffs after Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended trade talks and accused Trump's administration of trying to push unacceptable last-minute demands that would have affected Canada's sovereignty.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business is warning that small businesses could close due to the trade war, despite Ottawa's move to provide supports for affected industries.
