It was on this date in 1984 that Brian Mulroney officially became Prime Minister of Canada. Two-weeks earlier, on September 4, he and his Tories had received a remarkable majority mandate – earning them 211 seats in the Commons with 50 percent of the vote – from Canadians. Mr. Mulroney would go on to serve in Canada’s highest political post until 1993. The Mulroney Years were ones of tumult and change and he and his team transformed the nation. His many achievements were celebrated by Canadians of all political stripes when he passed into history in 2024. It was my high honour to serve as this proud Canadian’s Memoirs assistant for five years as he prepared his 2007 Memoirs.
Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist. He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney’s best-selling Memoirs and also served as a speechwriter to then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper and as a Fellow of the Queen’s Centre for the Study of Democracy under the leadership of Tom Axworthy. A resident of Kingston, Ontario, Milnes serves as the in-house historian at the 175 year-old Frontenac Club Hotel.
