Prince Edward Island pauses taxes on gasoline and diesel until next year

CHARLOTTETOWN -- Drivers on Prince Edward Island are getting a break on fuel taxes until early next year.

Premier Rob Lantz announced today that the government is suspending the provincial fuel tax until the end of January.

It will remove 8.47 cents from the price of a litre of gasoline and 14.15 centre from a litre of diesel, starting tomorrow.

Island fuel taxes will return at half their normal rate between Feb 1. and March 31.

The federal government has extended the break on its fuel excise tax until the end of January, which saves drivers about 10 cents per litre of gasoline.

The Alberta government announced this week it will suspend its provincial fuel tax for three months, starting Oct. 1.

In P.E.I., Lantz issued a statement saying the break on the fuel tax is something people will notice right away

"It's action for Islanders, and action for the businesses that keep our economy moving," he said.
