OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Mark Carney will be in Ankara today to kick off a three-day visit aimed at strengthening Canada's ties with Turkey.
Carney is set to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the presidential palace later today to start the first-ever official bilateral visit of a Canadian prime minister to Turkey.
The prime minister flew overnight to Turkey and will lay a wreath at the mausoleum of Turkish founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk shortly after arriving.
Carney will depart Ankara tonight for Istanbul, where he is set to meet with Turkish business leaders on Friday before heading back to Canada on Saturday.
Senior government officials briefing reporters before the trip say Canada is looking for closer political and economic ties with Turkey.
Canada and Turkey do about $4 billion in trade annually and the two nations launched free trade talks earlier this year on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara.
