VICTORIA -- Former minister Jennifer Whiteside has been named the interim leader of the BC NDP after the party's crushing defeat in last weekend's election.

Whiteside is the outgoing labour minister and previously served as minister of education, and minister of mental health and addictions.

She represents the riding of New Westminster-Coquitlam.

Whiteside says she is pleased and humbled to accept the interim leadership with the unanimous support of the incoming NDP caucus.

She says Mike Farnworth will serve as house leader, while Niki Sharma will be caucus chair.

Whiteside says British Columbians sent the party an "important message" by putting them on the opposition benches in last Saturday's snap election.
