Welcome to Saturday morning and welcome to The Buzz.
So that was a quiet week.
One of the things I learned in my old job anchoring some of the major events of our time was that, as big as some were, people were exhausted from them within hours and wanted to move on. There were exceptions, of course, like 9/11, but others, such as budgets, elections, and even referenda, did not have staying power. We’d do an election night, the biggest night on any news organization’s planned calendar, where millions would be watching, and twenty-four hours later you couldn’t drag people to the television for day-later reaction and analysis.
So how interested are you Buzz readers in some analysis of what happened last Tuesday night and why?
Or have I learned my lesson from the past? Okay, I haven’t. So, let’s go, but I will try to bring you context and perspective that perhaps you haven’t seen so far. Let’s start with Lisa Van Dusen the editor and publisher of Policy:
Back to the Future: The Predictable Return of Donald Trump Read >
Contributing Toronto Star columnist Justin Ling had another of his always-interesting pieces on what all this means.
Here it is:
🔒 Opinion | Trump weaponized ‘fake news.’ Now, we’re all going to be living in his version of reality Read >
We did a special YouTube episode of The Bridge, my podcast, in the early Wednesday morning hours after the election with Bruce Anderson and Keith Boag. It proved to be the fastest-growing podcast episode we’ve ever done, passing more than ten thousand downloads in a matter of hours. It’s well worth the listen and can be found on nationalnewswatch.com.
Okay, so what about the “P” word?
P as in pardon. It only took the editor of the conservative opinion magazine National Review 24 hours to argue that Joe Biden should pardon Donald Trump and he should do it right now. Here's his argument:
Biden Should Pardon Trump Read >
And what about the Russians?
Much has been made about the cozy relationship Trump has with Putin. So, what happens now on that? The Washington Post’s team of Francesca Ebel and Catherine Belton took a look:
‘We have won’: Russians envision new global system with Trump victory Read >
Can’t ignore the latest Ottawa rebellion talk.
Try this take from columnist Mark McQueen who figures the Trump victory was the worst thing that could happen to the rebels trying to dethrone Justin Trudeau and the best thing that could happen to Trudeau himself:
🔒 Opinion | One big winner of the U.S. election: Justin Trudeau Read >
And another shameless plug for our YouTube channel as Bruce and Chantal are back for your viewing with the latest Good Talk from yesterday. It too can be found at nationalnewswatch.com
Election night used to be a big television night. One of the biggest of all television viewing nights in the schedule.
Not anymore. The decline of viewing on traditional television is no more and this week showed just how the decline is almost precipitous and what that means for the future. Here’s how the Hollywood Reporter described it:
Media’s Crisis Point: It’s Losing Relevance and Scorned in Trump Era. A Reboot May Be Next Read >
Do you notice that I think, quite often actually, about the fact I’m 76 years old?
Well, I do and as a result, I’m always looking for stories that hint at how to ward off the possibility of incoming dementia. Cue this week’s study:
Working out just once a week slashes dementia risk by 25% Read >
So, today’s Saturday. As soon as I finish The Buzz, I’m off for my walk. Tomorrow too!
Have a great weekend, The Buzz will be back in seven days.
