Welcome to the weekend and welcome to The Buzz.
Well, what a week that was. Photo Op Carney was everywhere. Paris, London, Iqaluit, Montreal, Ottawa… and yes that was him in an Oilers jersey in Edmonton (Could that be where he’ll be running in the election or are the competing rumours about an Ottawa seat true?).
And then there’s Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, or PP as he’s called by many. What was he up to? Well, if you believe the Toronto Star’s Queen’s Park reporter Robert Benzie (I do, he’s never wrong), PP spent the week trying to get over the extremely cold shoulder he got from Doug Ford. The Ontario premier apparently blew PP off when he asked Ford for the Ontario Tory premier’s help in campaigning in the province. Too busy. Sorry pal. Ford, insiders say, has no time for PP and that’s been clear for a few years.

Okay, so what does all this mean? It means we are heading straight into a campaign, like this weekend. We’ll have a new government of some sort before the tulips pop in May.
So, not surprising then that the Buzz has some stuff on what’s to come.
Like the choice we all have to make. Making choices means asking questions and two old hands at this, Kevin Lynch and Paul Deegan, had this piece of advice in the Ottawa Citizen:

Lynch and Deegan: Six questions federal candidates had better have answers to Read >
Before I go any further, some of you who write to The Buzz are still a bit frustrated that I include items that are sometimes hidden behind a paywall. As I’ve said before, good journalism costs money, remember when you used to pay for home delivery? Anyway, there are ways around paywalls (sometimes) and here’s one method some Buzz readers have already found. Join a local library, especially one that has Press Reader. Some libraries, the bigger ones, offer Press Reader which accesses many, many newspapers and magazines which you can read for free. Check yours out.
Back to the main players in the campaign.
Here are two good pieces setting the stage for the weeks ahead. First here’s Max Fawcett in the National Observer on the latest with Pierre Poilievre:

Pierre Poilievre can't escape Donald Trump Read >
Now try this one from former Stephen Harper Communications Director, Andrew MacDougall, in the Toronto Star on Mark Carney.
Andrew lives and works in London now, so he had a front row seat to the new PM’s first overseas trip:

🔒 Andrew Macdougall: It's no wonder Mark Carney looked at ease in the U.K. Read >
Someone who is not running for federal politics, but is attracting a lot of attention south of the border, is Doug Ford.
Look at this latest Ford profile Americans are reading:

‘Captain Canada’ Takes On Trump Read >
Still on the premier front, Danielle Smith was in the headlines as the campaign begins with a threat… a list of demands for whoever wins to comply with or face a national unity crisis.
Jack Farrell at the Canadian Press wrote this:

Smith meets Carney, demands oil policy changes and warns national unity at stake Read >
Before we move on and away from Canadian politics, our reminder that our two weekly YouTube podcasts are available for your pleasure and should be required viewing during the campaign:
Rob Russo and Chantal Hebert are here with Good Talk: listen here
And Bruce Anderson and Fred DeLorey are here with Smoke, Mirrors and The Truth: listen here
Okay, forget the election. You know what also starts in the next few days? Baseball.
And few people like baseball more than Tim Harper. For years he prowled the political beat in Canada, but as good as he was, and he was good, you knew that every spring there was one thing really on his mind. Baseball. Now retired he still churns out the odd piece on politics and yes, on baseball. But this week’s baseball piece from Tim is different:

🔒 We visit Florida every March to watch the Jays at spring training—but Donald Trump changed all that Read >
Guess what?
No surprise here, but it’s a shock to all the conspiracy theorists who have dined out on this story for 62 years now. Lee Harvey Oswald still did it. Alone. Nothing to dispute that in the thousands of documents held secret for all these years but released this week. But they must keep the mystery going – there seems to be one document missing:

The crucial JFK file that was not released and still remains secret Read >
Remember shop classes?
Guys like me do. I remember using hammers and pliers and saws, welding and plumbing. But shop classes stopped many years ago. Now it seems they may be coming back. Why? Because AI, as amazing as it is, can’t replace those basic shop skills:

“Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”
Damn, Churchill had such a way with words and none more powerful than that sentence honouring the Battle of Britain pilots who defeated the Nazi fliers in those summer months of 1940. Now, almost eighty-five years later, the last of the “so few” passed away this week.

'End of an era': Last surviving Battle of Britain pilot dies Read >
