The Buzz Feb 28th: The AI Warning We Missed

Welcome to the weekend and welcome to The Buzz.

Every week, we run at least one story on AI. It’s a thing here at The Buzz – we keep offering up AI pieces because our readers want to know what’s coming next. How to keep up, how to adapt. And increasingly, how to stay safe.

This week, we have been wondering a lot about the safety aspect after the news hit that AI had sensed there might be a problem in Tumbler Ridge, BC, quite some time ago. But nothing was done about it. Now a lot of people are asking a lot of questions about how that could happen, what’s being done about it, and how we can make sure something like it never happens again.

Canadian Press covered the story this way:

Ministers raise prospect of new AI safety regulations as shooting questions mount

Pierre Poilievre got generally good reviews for his major foreign policy speech before a mostly Conservative business audience in Toronto on Thursday.

The pressure was on, especially for his expected remarks on Donald Trump and the negotiations with the United States. First, here’s what former Stephen Harper senior aide Andrew MacDougall wrote for The Line:

Andrew MacDougall: Poilievre finally counterattacks on the Trump front

Here’s a different take, from Abdul Matin Sarfraz in the National Observer:

Pierre Poilievre says Canada is to blame for Trump tariff crisis

By the way, I did an interview with Poilievre shortly after his speech, and we will run it in its entirety on Monday’s episode of The Bridge, on SiriusXM, the podcast, and on YouTube. Here’s a short excerpt:

Again, the full interview, with no edits, is on The Bridge, Monday.

The prime minister is on the other side of the world again this weekend.

As you are sipping your morning coffee, Mark Carney is having a dinner drink in India. It's an important trip, but also a controversial one. Here's what we know so far, from Anja Karadeglija of the Canadian Press:

Carney looks to strengthen economic ties with India on trip to Mumbai, New Delhi

What do Pierre Poilievre and Danielle Smith have in common?

They are both politicians. They’re both on the right of centre. They’re both high-ranking - one is a premier, the other, the federal opposition leader. And they both targeted immigrants this week. That didn’t sit well with the Globe’s Andrew Coyne:

🔒 Opinion | Smith and Poilievre find someone to blame for their problems: immigrants

Hard to believe, but we are now in our fifth year of the war in Ukraine.

Someone who was at the UN when the war started back in February 2022 and tried hard to find a way to first prevent it, and then stop it, was Canada’s Bob Rae. His thoughts on yet another anniversary for a war we thought would only last a few days or weeks, are in Policy:

In Ukraine, the Battle of Truth vs. Myth has Already Been Won

You know the old saying “follow the money”?

It’s been the root of a lot of good investigative stories over the years, and it is again with this one. It’s from Emma Loop, a video journalist for the CBC in Windsor:

Moroun donated $1M US to Trump-supporting super PAC before Gordie Howe bridge threats

A few weeks ago, I was watching Donald Trump rambling through a speech about energy.

He covered a lot of bases the way he always does, making stuff up to fit his beliefs. And then he came to wind turbines, and the real firehose (of lies) came out. He said the Chinese make most of them, and they sell them everywhere. But don’t look for any in China, he said, they don’t use any because he said, they don’t work, and the Chinese aren’t stupid like us who use them.

Wrong. Again.

Here are some real facts, thanks to my favourite climate writer Katharine Hayhoe, a Canadian in Texas.

Have China's carbon emissions peaked?

Check out Katherine’s weekly newsletter, it’s great.

While our eyes remain focused on Ukraine and Iran, many eyes in Asia are locked on just one place. Taiwan.

And maybe we should be, too. Not for the war it could produce, but for the product it could make disappear, at least for us. And trust me, without it, we could be in big trouble. Check this out in the New York Times:

There used to be a time when CBS was THE network that mattered most.

The one we all watched. Think Cronkite, Wallace, Safer, and that’s just a starter of a list that could go on and on. CBS had a stable of stars for years. That’s what makes today so sad. The legendary network is in a shambles and could be facing the end of the line unless something happens to turn things around. Try this from the Hollywood Reporter:

The Clock May Be Ticking on ‘60 Minutes’ as We Know It

Before we go, a reminder that on Monday on The Bridge (SiriusXM Ch 167, and on Apple, Spotify and lots of other podcast platforms) we’ll run my interview with Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. You might find it interesting!

The Buzz will be back in seven days. Have a great weekend and stay safe.
